About Kayakalp

Kayakalp is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) launched in 2015 as an extension of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Its primary aim is to improve cleanliness, hygiene, waste management, infection control practices, and eco-friendly health facilities. Facilities that demonstrate exemplary performance are recognized and incentivized.

Objectives

  • Foster a culture of ongoing assessment and peer review related to hygiene and sanitation.

  • Recognize and incentivize public health facilities with high standards of cleanliness and infection control.

  • Share and scale sustainable best practices that enhance patient experience and health outcomes.

Key Focus Areas (Kayakalp Assessment Themes)

  • Facility Upkeep

  • Sanitation & Hygiene

  • Waste Management

  • Infection Prevention & Control

  • Support Services

  • Hygiene Promotion

  • Cleanliness Beyond Facility Boundary

  • Eco-friendly Facility Practices

How it Works

  • Facilities undertake internal and peer assessments using standardized checklists.

  • A score of 70% or above in peer/external assessment is required to qualify for awards and incentives.

  • Top-performing facilities are recognized annually at state and national levels.

About Swachh Swasth Sarvatra

  • Swachh Swasth Sarvatra (SSS) is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Launched in 2016, this program focuses on integrating community sanitation with healthcare facility cleanliness and hygiene, particularly in open defecation free (ODF) regions.

Goals

  • Strengthen public health centres and surrounding communities in achieving and sustaining high standards of hygiene and sanitation.

  • Promote behavioural change to support ODF maintenance and hygienic practices.

  • Facilitate convergence between health facilities and community sanitation initiatives.

Implementation Highlights

  • Collaboration with local sanitation and health stakeholders (e.g., ASHAs, PRIs, VHSNC).

  • Joint activities between public health facility leadership and sanitation departments to sustain cleanliness gains.

  • Training in WASH practices and community mobilisation for behaviour change.
